If you've never listened to Fela before, here's your chance. If you have, here's a really great compilation mixed by Chief Xcel of Blackalicious. Funk/jazz afrobeat at its very very best. Chief Xcel's result is one of the best Fela Kuti productions I've heard before and my personal favorite.
Fela produced a lot of albums before his death and I feel like this imparts the kind of glimpse into his music anyone could enjoy, fan or not. Fela was the leader of a political organization, the Movement of the People, that he used to run for President of Nigeria in 1979. He was an extremely political Pan-Africanist Socialist who fought for civil and human rights against oppressive dictatorships and militarist states in Africa. Fela used his music to communicate his message to the people and subvert the system, in many cases, at the cost of his personal safety. And he wasn't a bad sax player, either.
